The Kaza Mwendo Low-Cost Housing Project started as an international participatory design workshop. Bridging the African and the North American continents, the workshop supports a group of Nairobi's slum dwellers united by the desire to create for themselves a safe and sustainable place they can call Home -
This Design for Development project aims to create low-cost and incremental housing typologies informed by an approach of self-built and social sustainability.

Our vision
Building Intermediary Cities
Key principles
The project is located in the County of Machakos, in a peri-urban area situated 60km from Nairobi. This is where the members of the cooperative have bought a piece of land. To respond to the social, cultural, and economical needs of the Kaza Mwendo group, the urban planning and housing typologies have been designed to create a sustainable ecosystem that embraces a bioclimatic approach, local construction technologies, income generation strategies, security and community development guidelines, as well as the notion of shared resources for affordability. Therefore, the housing project aims to become a structuring development in the growth of Machakos by improving living conditions for low-income urban dwellers, strengthening economic opportunities, and supporting change towards local governance.
